The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has submitted a set of recommendations to the government to address ongoing social media campaigns that threaten Pakistan’s national security. The PTA has identified several key challenges that must be addressed to ensure a safer online environment.
One major issue is the lack of international agreements on internet governance, which has created a void allowing anti-Pakistan propaganda to spread unchecked on social media platforms. Additionally, the spread of illegal content, including hate speech and misinformation, poses a significant threat to national security.
The PTA has also raised concerns about anonymous social media users who disseminate harmful content without fear of retribution and unlicensed Over-the-Top (OTT) services that provide content without adhering to local regulations. To tackle these challenges, the PTA recommends developing a national consensus on social media management by adopting a joint strategy to align all stakeholders. Enhancing the capacity of courts to deliver swift verdicts in cybercrime cases is also suggested, enabling more efficient prosecution of online offenses.
Furthermore, the PTA emphasizes the importance of raising public awareness about responsible internet and social media usage to prevent the spread of harmful content and encourage citizens to report suspicious activity.
Finally, the PTA suggests improving the capacity of law enforcement agencies to effectively address online threats and protect national security. Implementing these recommendations aims to fortify Pakistan’s defenses against social media threats and ensure a secure online environment for its citizens.
