Meta has revealed that India has emerged as the largest market for its Meta AI, a significant achievement given that the AI product was only recently introduced in the country.
During Meta’s Q2 2024 earnings call, CFO Susan Li highlighted that Meta AI has been a massive hit in India, driven largely by the widespread use of WhatsApp, which boasts 500 million users in the region. Since its launch in India a few months ago, Meta AI has handled billions of queries, showcasing its rapid adoption.
Li remarked, “We’re seeing particularly promising signs on WhatsApp in terms of retention and engagement, which has coincided with India becoming our largest market for Meta AI usage.”
Meta AI, which is integrated across Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and the web, initially launched in the U.S. last year. The technology received an upgrade in April with the introduction of the Llama 3 model and expanded to over a dozen countries. India began testing Meta AI around the same time but made it widely available only in June, following the general elections.
Despite the success, Meta has faced some challenges adapting AI to the diverse Indian market. For instance, earlier reports highlighted issues with Meta AI generating stereotypical images and inconsistent content, which led to adjustments in the AI’s algorithms to better reflect cultural sensitivities.
Recently, Meta expanded Meta AI’s language support to include French, German, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, bringing its availability to 22 countries, with new additions including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico.
Looking ahead, Zuckerberg mentioned that training the next Llama 4 model will require nearly ten times the computing power of Llama 3, indicating the company’s commitment to advancing its AI capabilities.
In other updates, Meta reported that Threads is nearing 200 million users, a strong growth signal for the platform. Additionally, Zuckerberg noted positive trends in Facebook usage among young adults in the U.S.
Overall, Meta’s advancements in AI and social media highlight its growing influence and the successful expansion of its technologies in diverse global markets.
