What to Expect from Google’s Made by Google 2024 Event: Pixel 9, Gemini, and More.

Google’s much-anticipated hardware event is just around the corner, set to kick off on August 13 at 10 a.m. PT. This marks a shift from their usual mid-fall timing, and it places the Pixel 9 launch ahead of Apple’s iPhone 16 announcement, which is scheduled for September.

Why the early event?

While Google hasn’t explained the timing, it’s possible the company wants to stand out in a crowded news cycle, especially with the current U.S. presidential election making headlines. Plus, Google has a lot to showcase with its Gemini AI, promising new features that could set the stage for the next wave of Android innovations.

This year, Google has again opted for a pre-event device reveal strategy, which has been a successful way to build buzz during the summer. In July, they teased the Pixel 9 Pro and the Pixel 9 Fold—two high-end additions to the Pixel lineup.

Additionally, Google has updated its classic Nest Learning Thermostat with the new Nest Learning Thermostat 4. This model comes 13 years after the original and nearly a decade after the Thermostat 3. The company also introduced the Google TV Streamer, and reaffirmed that Google Assistant will remain a key part of their ecosystem—for now.

Phones Built for the Gemini Era

The new Pixel 9 devices are being marketed as “built for the Gemini era,” highlighting the integration of Google’s latest AI advancements. At Google I/O in May, Gemini was a major focus, though the event was more developer-centric. The Pixel 8a was announced just before I/O, indicating Google’s strategy to separate its hardware announcements from AI news.

Apple made waves with its own AI at WWDC in June, but their approach has been more focused on on-device processing, unlike Google’s more extensive use of generative AI. With Google’s introduction of Gemini Nano on Pixel 8 devices last month, it’s clear that AI will play a central role in their upcoming products.

Google has ambitious plans for the Pixel line, aiming to elevate it beyond its traditional secondary status in the Android market. The company has been investing heavily in its own mobile chips and AI research, potentially setting the stage for a significant breakthrough with the Pixel 9.

Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Fold

Google’s teaser videos for the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Fold highlight some impressive new features. The Pixel 9 Pro’s design includes a standout camera bar, while the Pixel 9 Fold’s video introduces its innovative foldable design. The decision to brand the foldable as Pixel 9 Pro Fold rather than Pixel Fold 2 suggests a deeper integration into the Pixel family and positions it as a top-tier device.

The Pixel Fold’s initial $1,799 price tag has since dropped to $1,300, making it more accessible. However, it might be wise to wait for the official event to see if Google announces even more attractive deals.

Upcoming Pixel Devices and Android 15

We can expect Google to unveil several new Pixel devices: the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Premium. All will feature the latest Tensor G4 chip and run Android 15. The final release of Android 15, code-named “Vanilla Ice Cream,” will bring new features such as improved multitasking, satellite connectivity, and enhanced privacy options like Private Space.

The question of Google Assistant’s fate has loomed large over the last several Gemini updates. It’s clear that Google ultimately wants its in-house GenAI to take over Android’s most pressing tasks, but it remains to be seen whether that means replacing Assistant outright or reinforcing it the way Apple has with Siri.

Users can currently rely on Gemini as their primary assistant, if they choose, though Google ultimately did the right thing and held off replacing Assistant outright.

Assistant played a more central role in previous years’ Made by Google events, owing to the inclusion of Google Home/Nest announcements. As excitement around smart home devices has waned, however, the company has taken its foot off the gas. Perhaps Gemini’s arrival can breathe some much-needed life back into the space.

What About Google Assistant?

There’s been speculation about Google Assistant’s future, especially with the rise of Gemini AI. While Google hasn’t completely replaced Assistant, it’s clear that Gemini will play a significant role in Android’s future. The company’s reluctance to fully phase out Assistant indicates a careful balance between maintaining existing tools and integrating new AI advancements.

The smart home sector has seen waning excitement, but with Gemini’s introduction, there’s hope for renewed interest. The Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Buds Pro 2 are also expected to make an appearance, showcasing Google’s continued investment in wearables.

My Take:

The Made by Google 2024 event promises to be a game-changer with its focus on AI and new hardware. Google’s strategic early reveal and integration of advanced AI features in their products signal a significant shift in the tech landscape. I’m particularly excited to see how Gemini and the new Pixel devices will push the boundaries of what’s possible in tech.

Stay tuned for more updates as the event approaches!
